A colourful variety!

As there is a variety of everything in the world, cartoons are not just that by name.There are numerous types of them, whether they look the same or  not, they will all have a different concept to function. 


There are two cartoon styles: the cartoony style 
which is less human like and more fun styled like in the image on the right of a duck listening to music with an iPod.





Then the second style is illustration which is totally the opposite of 'cartoony', more human like and more serious style like in the image on the left of Spider"Man". Spiderman is human like, his figure is human like, language he speaks and his lifestyle though he is a superhero.






We also get different types of cartoons such as stop frame animation and there is an image on the right that accompanies this type to show you how it is achieved. A child is doing this they appeal to them more than anyone else.









Anime, this originated in Japan. Their nature is so soft and kind that children relate more to them. They have large eyes and heads and they portray the lives of a child. Check the image on the left out!

Gag cartoons are in a single panel and are often humorous. That one frame gives the whole concept and function of the cartoon. There are literal and non-literal aspects of gag cartoons like in the image on the right. That's what design is. You don't always have to look at everything the way it is.





The difference or variety of the types and styles of cartoons are backed by the designers' purpose. Whether the difference is in the name, physical appearance of the cartoons or the story line, the design behind these figures is crucial because they provide the image.

On the left is a perfect example that cartoons are different in design, concept, look, function, variety and style.

Primarily, cartoons are all about COLOUR!!!

The heart of cartoons

Cartoons are a film made using techniques to produce the appearance of movement. We also get stop frame animation, merely like cartoons which create the illusion of movement. In stop frame animation, the cartoon effect is delivered by the use of drawings, colour and mostly paper.

So, cartoons are made using animation techniques, this means cartoons are animation. Animation is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence. 

Graphic design is what animation falls under. Graphic design is also known as 'Communication design'. It takes two forms-virtual and physical and may include images, words, or graphic forms. It can also serve any purpose, whether commercial, educational, cultural or political. 

Graphic design also relates to visual art, meaning; drawing.

Graphic design is the heart and core of cartoons because that is the only way animation can be achieved with good quality. Cartoons also relate to web design. The designers of these cartoons aim to produce systems that are meant to be experienced over time. This is where the concept and the story line come in because they determine the relevance. Designers aim that the target audience's encounter, late develops a relationship with what has been designed.

These designers do not only design for themselves, they have clients who are in a certain fields as well where design is needed-for brands, logo's et cetra.

If Graphic design did not exist, there would have not been cartoons. Yes they would be drawn, but how were they going to be animated? Animation through Graphic design have the control on cartoons.

Think, Conceptualize, Draw

In a sense, cartoons are made to amuse. Their nature is so appealing and inviting that you can just laugh when they're in your sight. They can be used for anything. An example is the black and white comic strips in newspapers about politics.

It also starts with a drawing, this is art. It can also be accompanied by a caption, because that is where the concept lies. The way they are drawn, the intention is to represent issues symbolically and often satirically as in the image that accompanies this text, above.In that context, we also get the non-literal part of design, this is experienced verbally and by sight.

The background of having a cartoon in the way that it is desired to be is the starting point. The origination.

There is to set humour like in a Comic strip.

To give visual commentary like in Political cartoons-which are satirical rather than funny.

To give a viewpoint of the subject that is for instance the cartoonist on a political level.

All the above are the few functions. 

Cartoons are usually designed for children. They are about silly, amusing things like superheroes. It is also in the essence of laughter. This is why cartoons have to be in a state and designed that a child's brain understands what is sees with the eye.

There are adult cartoons as well such as Family Guy. So, when the artist begins to think, conceptualize, draw, the audience that the artist is designing for is important and must meet the purpose that the artist had in mind from the beginning.Design is to do or plan something with a specific purpose in mind? All missions will be accomplished. Each character of the whole show being designed has its own shape, personality and attributes, the construction of the figure itself has to evolve around these qualities so that the character is probable in the eye of the audience.

Cartoons promote positivism, they create and they add value.
